Google Unveils The Nexus One, Sans Surprises

Google unveiled the HTC Nexus One on Tuesday, as expected. Also as expected, the price of the phone is $180 subsidized (with a two-year T-Mobile contract) and $530 unsubsidized. Note that’s not unlocked, but unsubsidized. All Nexus Ones ship unlocked, but if you want to pay the lower price, you have to get a T-Mobile contract.

The Nexus One ships with Android 2.1, as rumored. It will have a 1 GHz Snapdragon CPU, a 5-megapixel camera, and a 3.7-inch (diagonal) WVGA AMOLED touchscreen, supporting 800 x 480 pixels. The device is thinner than an iPhone, at 11.5 mm (vs. 12.3 mm) and is 119 mm tall and 59.8 mm wide. It will have a replaceable battery (take that, Apple).

Google also indicated that a Verizon CDMA version will be coming in the Spring, as well as a Vodafone version. The bad thing, for users in the U.S., is the phone may not be tied th T-Mobile through SIM-locking, but the phone won’t support 3G on AT&T’s network, which pretty much ties it to T-Mobile’s network in a different way.

Is it an iPhone-killer? That moniker has been given to several smartphones, and all have failed. Without the pricing plan that was rumored (subsidized price even for an unlocked, and contract-less phone), this is less interesting and just another Android phone.

It is, however, a very fast Android phone, and one with Google’s name on it. That has created a huge amount of interest. No, it’s not an iPhone killer, but it will definitely hurt other Android OEMs, Windows Mobile, and Palm, as well.
